Oxygen enriched air at 1.3 atmospheres did not improve function in children with autism spectrum disorder.
| 1. No evidence of improved function following 1.3 atm hyperbaric oxygen at 24-28% O2 **compared to placebo. |

Three-part Clinical Question: In children with autistic spectrum disorder, does the administration of hyperbaric oxygen therapy compared to standard therapy lead to a measureable improvement in communication and social interaction? Search Terms: autistic disorder, autism spectrum disorder
The Study: Double-blinded concealed randomised controlled trial with intention-to-treat. The Study Patients: English speaking children aged 2-14yrs with diagnosed autism spectrum disorder according to DSM-IV criteria. Control group (N = 23; 16 analysed): 80 x 1 hour sessions over 15 weeks breathing air at ambient pressure in the chamber Experimental group (N = 23; 18 analysed): as above but breathing 24-28% oxygen at 1.3 ATA.
- The Evidence:
| Outcome | Time to Outcome | Control group | Experimental group | Relative risk increase | Absolute risk increase | NNT |
| improved ADOS (see comments) | 15 weeks | 0.174 | 0.217 | 25% | 0.043 | 23 |
| ^ | 95% CIs: | 156% to -100% | 0.18 to -0.27 | NNT 5 to INF; NNH 4 to INF |
| Non-Event Outcomes | Time to outcome/s | Control group | Experimental group | P-value |
| secondary outcome measure VABS-II communication change | 80 sessions | 16 | 18 | 0.51 |
| VABS-II daily living skills change | 80 sessions | 16 | 18 | 0.75 |
- Comments:
1. Randomisation was by coin toss after matching pairs for age and hours of applied behavioural analysis received. Matching and random assignment done by investigator who was otherwise blinded. 2. The study power too low to detect clinically important differences between groups. 3. ADOS is 'The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule'. This is a semi-structured assessment of communication, social interaction, and play The ADOS consists of four modules, each of which is appropriate for children and adults of differing developmental and language levels, ranging from nonverbal to verbally-fluent. 4. VABS-II is the 'Vineland Adaptive Bahaviour Scale' and a measure of personal and social skills required for everyday living.
