Hyperbaric oxygen breathing increases oxygen saturation of haemoglobin compared to air breathing.

Clinical bottom line

1. HBOT raised arterial Hb saturation compared to air breathing
2. HBO also reduced the heart rate on within group comparison.

Three-part Clinical Question:For patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy, does exposure to high oxygen under pressure, compared to air breathing, result in any changes in cardiorespiratory status?
Search Terms: Pulse rate, sytemic blood pressure, oxygen saturation

The Study:Non-blinded randomised controlled trial with intention-to-treat.
The Study Patients: Adult patients having HBOT for a variety of indications.
Control group (N = 7; 7 analysed): Air breathing for 120 minutes total. Tested at baseline, 35 minutes and 120 minutes
Experimental group (N = 7; 7 analysed): As above but in the hyperbaric chamber breathing 100% oxygen at 2.5 ATA for 95 minutes total.

Comments:
1. Very small study with no clear sample size calculation
2. The only between group comparison that was statistically significant was haemoglobin saturation, while heart rate decreased in within group comparison in HBO group.
3. No detailed results given for air group.
4. Largely pointless study.
