Two exercise acclimatisation strategies both improved subsequent exercise capacity during immersion in warm water
Clinical bottom line:
|
1. Both strategies improved performance but there was no difference between groups. |

Three-part Clinical Question:Is exercise capability in warm water following either of two heat acclimation strategies increased?
Search Terms: Diving. exercise; heat acclimatisation
The Study:
Non-blinded randomised controlled trial with intention-to-treat.
The Study Patients: Fit, experienced male divers.
Control group (N = 12; ? analysed): Two hours cycling at 50 Watts resistance in water at 34.4C for nine days
Experimental group (N = 12; ? analysed): One hour cycling at minimal resistance in water at 36.7C for nine days.
The Evidence:
The time to exhaustion during warm-water cycling ‘was not different between two heat acclimation groups.’ No exact results for this were given in the abstract.
Comments:
1. Abstract only. No details of randomisation method or concealment.
2. Some unexplained terms in the abstract makes interpretation difficult. Reporting of results as unclear.
3. Both groups showed evidence of successful exercise capability after the nine days of acclimatisation.
